No one does yoga like New Yorkers do.  New York is the “yoga capital” of the world. There is an apocryphal story of a New York yogi who saved up all his money and traveled to India so he could study at the feet of the masters.  On the way from the airport, the Indian taxi driver said to him: “I wish someday to go to New York – where I can learn yoga!”

New York City has more than 100 yoga studios.  The city offers everything from traditional haha, to sweat-producing Vinyasa (a constant movement from pose to pose), to traditional Mysore-style Ashtanga (an intense, aerobic style yoga that uses specific ujjayi breathing.)

Yoga is an ancient science, but it truly is the “fitness of the future.” Yoga poses combine movement with breath.  Breath – or prune – is the source of our life.  When we come into contact with the source of our being, profound changes can occur.

I originally developed this listing to help myself find a class in every neighborhood in the city.  Like so many New Yorkers, I had a busy schedule, trying to fit in a class when I could.  The NYC yoga scene is vibrant and just waiting to be explored:
